Alumni Spotlight: Oliver Unger

Alumni Spotlight: Oliver Unger

Checking in on the success of one our former students.

Written by Charles Simon, General Manager of Stages Music Arts

I’ve had the privilege of watching Oliver Unger grow as a musician for many years now, and I couldn’t be more proud of the incredible path he’s on. He started lessons with me at age 10, and 10 years later—as he finishes up his Junior Year at Berklee College of Music, Oliver is already making waves in the professional music world.

Recently, Oliver wrapped up a three-show mini-tour with the nationally acclaimed R&B artist Jarrod Lawson. The shows were nothing short of amazing, with performances at two legendary local venues: Ram’s Head Annapolis and The Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia. I snagged these photos at The Birchmere, a place that holds a special connection for both Oliver and me. In fact, the last time I was there, it was with Oliver and his dad to see the legendary bassist Victor Wooten back in 2017. That night, Oliver had the chance to meet Victor in person. To now see Oliver on that very stage, playing bass to a sold-out audience, is such a full-circle moment. I couldn’t be prouder of him.

But that’s not all. Right after the show Oliver hit the road again, playing in Montreal with Eli Yacinthe, and the next night in New York City with another talented artist, Cordelia Fox.

It’s amazing to see how far Oliver has come. His journey from his early days at Stages—where he was a force from the very beginning—has been nothing short of inspiring. He honed his skills in our programs, played in the All-Access All-Star band, and worked tirelessly to get to where he is now. His dedication and love for music have always been clear, and it’s exciting to see that passion translate into real-world success.

I have no doubt that Oliver has an incredibly bright future ahead of him. Whether he’s playing on stages across the country or in the studio, he is truly a force in the music world. He’s already done so much, and yet, I know this is just the beginning. I can’t wait to see where his journey takes him next.
