Introducing our new rock band director: Brett Sellers

Brett has already been a valued member of our team as a drums and percussion instructor, and now he’s stepping into a leadership role—bringing both depth of experience and a clear, student-focused approach to the band program.
A Strong Musical Foundation
Brett is completing his Bachelor of Music degree in Percussion Performance at Towson University, where he studied under Dr. Michelle Humphreys. During his time there, he performed extensively with the Towson Percussion Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, and Wind Ensemble, serving as principal percussionist on major works like Carmina Burana and Die Fledermaus. He was also recognized with the Mary Pat Hughes Memorial Scholarship and the James L. Dunbar Memorial Scholarship.
His experience spans far beyond the concert hall. Brett has over 20 years of playing experience and 8 years of teaching, with a background that includes classical, chamber, marching, and drum set performance. He’s performed professionally on drum set for over a decade and currently plays with several groups, covering everything from jazz and country-blues to heavy metal.
A Well-Rounded Musician and Educator
Brett’s teaching reflects that wide range. He works across styles including rock, swing, and Latin, with a particular love for progressive rock. Artists like Dream Theater, Tool, TWRP, Ripe, and Blue Man Group have shaped his musical voice, and one of his standout personal achievements was performing at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC.
He also brings valuable experience from the marching arts, having performed with the Towson University Marching Band and taught award-winning ensembles at both Patterson Mill High School and Calvert Hall. His students have earned top placements at state and regional competitions, including a US Bands national championship in 2024.
In addition, Brett has performed in numerous musical theater productions and is preparing for American Idiot this summer—another example of the versatility he brings to his work.
Teaching Philosophy and Approach
At the core of Brett’s teaching is a simple but effective principle: slow down and count. He focuses on building strong fundamentals while keeping lessons engaging and tailored to each student’s interests. His goal is to create a well-rounded musical experience that balances enjoyment with real skill development.
Brett describes himself as committed—and that shows in both his teaching and his continued growth as a musician.
More Than Just Music
Before fully committing to music, Brett spent three years studying astrophysics—an interest he still holds today. If he weren’t a musician, he’d likely be studying stellar spectroscopy, and seeing a live space launch is still on his bucket list.
Outside of music, he enjoys baseball, Dungeons & Dragons, horror movies, and video games—interests that help him connect easily with students and create a relaxed, approachable learning environment.
Looking Ahead
As Brett steps into his role as Rock Band Director, students can expect thoughtful leadership, high standards, and an emphasis on real ensemble playing. His combination of experience, versatility, and genuine enthusiasm makes him a natural fit to lead the program forward.
We’re excited to have him at the helm.
